About Wicklow Mountains Special Protection Area (SPA)

Covering a vast expanse of approximately 20,000 hectares across the Wicklow Mountains, this Special Protection Area (SPA) forms part of the larger Wicklow Mountains National Park and surrounding uplands. The area is characterized by steep mountain ranges, deep glacial valleys, heathlands, blanket bogs, and upland lakes, creating a mosaic of habitats essential to a variety of bird species and other wildlife. The designation as an SPA stems from its role in protecting important bird populations, including the Hen Harrier, Merlin, Peregrine Falcon, and various species of waders such as the Golden Plover. These species rely on the area's remote peatlands, grasslands, and heath for breeding and feeding. Beyond its conservation importance, the Wicklow Mountains SPA offers visitors numerous well-maintained trails ranging from gentle valley walks to challenging mountain summits like Lugnaquilla, the highest peak in the region. The nearby monastic settlement of Glendalough provides a significant cultural and historical experience, blending natural beauty with ancient heritage. Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn here for hiking, birdwatching, mountaineering, and photography, benefiting from stunning panoramic views and the tranquility of unspoiled wilderness. Seasonal variations bring changes to the landscape and wildlife activity, with vibrant heather blooms in late summer and irruptions of migratory birds in autumn. The Wicklow Mountains SPA is managed to balance conservation objectives with sustainable outdoor recreation, ensuring the protection of its sensitive habitats while welcoming nature lovers and adventurers.
